Janai Crooms named Rhode Island’s Player of the Year

Janai Crooms ’18, a four-time New England All-Star, was selected as the Rhode Island Player of the Year for the ALL-USA State Girls Basketball Teams.

According to USA Today High School Sports, she averaged 12.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game during the 2017-18 season.

Crooms, who is committed to play for Ohio State University’s women’s basketball team next year, led the St. Andrew’s girls’ varsity basketball team to a 16-4 overall record and a top five ranking in New England.

“For the four years Janai has played at St. Andrew’s, she has helped make every one of her teammates a better player through her unselfish and remarkably talented play,” the girls’ varsity basketball coach, Andy Shirber, said.

This is among many achievements for Crooms in the past year. She was nominated for the Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year Award, and in February, she was the first St. Andrew’s female to have her number retired.

Schirber added, “Janai has been the heart and soul of the program and has led us to new heights of success.”
